Students from Sebring McKinley Junior and Senior High School joined forces to collect food and hygiene supplies for 27 families in the district during the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
In October, McKinley High School’s Ecology Club went “trick-or-treating for Turkeys,” an annual fundraising effort during which students decorate empty milk jugs as turkeys and venture out into the community, going door-to-door asking for donations that are used to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys for local families.
This year, they raised $800 for turkeys and hams.
In November, the Junior High Student Senate hosted their eighth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, and together, with the money raised from the Ecology Club, they were able to purchase turkeys and hams to put together complete Thanksgiving meal baskets, as well as pantry staples and hygiene products.
“We’re so proud of our students who worked together and gathered hundreds of items for the food drive, which increases the amount of support we can provide to district families,” said Student Senate Advisor Lori DeHoff.
The donations ranged from holiday favorites to pantry staples such as potatoes, stuffing, gravy, pasta, pasta sauce, applesauce, tuna, cereal, macaroni and cheese, desserts, fruit, vegetables and soup, as well as hygiene products, including soap, dish soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, and more.
The district would like to thank the community for its support, and commend its students and staff, the Ecology Club and Junior Senate for their efforts to fund these essential Thanksgiving food giveaways.
