Sebring Local 4th Grade Science Students Drop Eggs from Elementary Rooftop, Local Fire Department’s Fire Truck Ladder
In Series of Trial Runs in Preparation for Oh WOW! Egg Drop Challenge
Students in Jeana D’Ostroph’s 4th grade science class have been hard at work preparing for an upcoming Egg Drop Challenge hosted by Oh Wow! Science Center, in which they’ll compete against students from other area schools, to test their supportive designs built to protect eggs from breaking upon the drop’s impact. The event will take place September 21 at Debartolo Commons.
Students have been hard at work perfecting their devices constructed from wood, glue, paper products, straws, rubber bands, cardboard, cups, string, plastics, bubble wrap, tape, yarn and bowls. They have put their designs to the test through various trial runs, dropping their eggs from a ladder in the classroom, and then from a slightly higher elevation from playground equipment, then from the rooftop of the B.L. Miller Elementary building and the highest drop of all, from the Sebring Local Fire Department’s Fire Truck ladder at 50 feet and then 100 feet.
“This hands-on project provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the science behind gravity and momentum, and how that relates to mass and velocity, while also having fun with experimentation,” says D’Ostroph. “They’re very excited and we’re looking forward to a great event.”
